Vincent van Gogh
Sunflowers
Vincent van Gogh, one of the most famous and well known artists of the modern era, was born in Groot-Zundert, the Netherlands in 1853. His paintings are characterized by their bold colors and broad brushstrokes. The painter's life was plagued by affairs, failed relationships, and psychological crises. Painting was a way to vent his emotional turmoil. In 1886, van Gogh went to Paris and became part of the Paris art scene with such French painters as Camille Pissarro, Emile Bernard, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Seurat. Throughout his life he experimented with impressionism, modern art styles and yet created a style that is uniquely his own. Drawn to the luminous colors of the south of France, van Gogh moved to Arles, France in 1888 where he perfected his expressive style. Showing the beauty of nature, became a central theme in his paintings, Vincent is considered to have paved the way for the later Expressionist movement, where not ony the external appearance of the subject was of importance but also the internal psychological condition.
