Bill Herrick has a simple
philosophy, "Do everything you can in this life. Do it for the sheer
joy it can bring you, or don't do it at all."
Bill has had a long career as a creative person. Prior to taking up woodcarving,
he produced, wrote, and directed more than 200 documentary, training, and
promotional films, numerous industrial shows, all the while sharing in the
management of the agency he helped found in 1955, when he was twenty-nine
years old.
In 1973, Bill left the Big Apple, the day he realized the fun had gone out
of his work. He and his wife, Phyllis Dunn, took up life on the banks of the
Battenkill River and ended up, as he puts it, "with a happy life working
in wood, stone, and bronze, and writing poems just about every day of the
26 years we've lived in Vermont."
Prior to joinging Big Sky Carvers, Bill and his wife owned and successfully
operated a retail store and an art gallery. Bill has published two books of
poetry, "Carving Myself" and "In the Vicinity of Rivers."
To say that Bill Herrik is an ardent fly fisherman would be an understatement.
He has fished rivers from Argentina to Alaska, and from Montana to Laborador.
He was a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Gordon Anglers
and is currentluy Trustee Emeritus of the American Museum of Flyfishing. He
is a long-standing memner of the New York Angler's Club and the Atlantic Salmon
Federeation.
